WCO supports the Botswana United Revenue Service (BURS) in implementing gender equality and diversity

15 十二月 2023

From the 5th to the 8th of December 2023, the WCO provided strategic assistance to the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) to validate and complement the findings from its Gender Equality and Diversity organizational assessment and support BURS in finalizing a dedicated GED action plan. The assistance mission was conducted under the framework of the WCO-Sweden “Trade Facilitation and Customs Modernization Programme for Sustainable Development in Sub-Sahara Africa” (Sida-WCO TFCM Programme).

Recognizing the importance of gender equality and diversity (GED) as prerequisites for achieving sustainable development in East and Southern Africa (ESA), this multi-component Programme aims to support partner countries in developing and implementing gender-responsive and inclusive policies and practices.

This support leverages initiatives and tools that the WCO has launched in recent years to enhance the GED agenda, including the WCO Gender Equality Organizational Assessment Tool (GEOAT) and the Blended Training Package on advancing gender equality and inclusion targeting Customs. Using the GEOAT, 12 partner countries have been guided to identify current strengths and gaps regarding GED implementation and encouraged to develop action plans to meet these gaps.

The assistance provided to BURS built on previous capacity building support carried out under the Programme, including a regional GED training conducted in February 2023.

The mission resulted in identifying a number of recommendations for BURS to better prioritize the activities to implement in the next two years. The mission also served to meet with external partners and discuss collaboration opportunities, including the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sports and Culture, SACU, SADC and ATAF.
